One of my closest, dearest friends recently had an accident around
Father's day. She was riding her motorcycle and a car crossed the
centre line and hit her head on. There is extensive nerve damage in
her left leg and her pelvis is mostly shattered. This is the first
I've heard of it, because she's just now been moved from a hospital bed
to a nursing home. She called a mutual friend very early this morning,
and he, bless him, left me a message on myspace as soon as he got off
the phone with her. She said that she has been trying to get my number
off of people I haven't seen in forever so she could contact me. We've
always scolded her about those damned bikes, but she's so damned head
strong and...and so Zoe! I didn't know anything was wrong because Zoe
is such a free spirit, constantly moving her vibrant self from place to
place. But she always faithfully comes back right when you need her.
And now she needs all of her friends and I feel like I can't be there.
It makes me wish I'd never left Seattle, that I'd stayed in closer
contact. My foundations feel more than shaken, but I am clinging to
the miracle that she survived. Broken and bruised, but still alive.
I made a friend. Her name is Emily and we work together. She's adorable and very hyper, which usually gets on my nerves, but she's too awesome to bother me. We've been working together almost five months now, and finally bonded over me showing her how to recover the bead aisles, and her discovering that I'm a Depeche Mode fan.
Her reaction: *gasps and holds a hand to her mouth* You like DEPECHE MODE?! They're my absolute FAVOURITE band!!!!
When Ryan found out about this, he invited her over and we listened to music and had bubble tea and just had a really good time. Ryan is never comfortable with strangers, so the fact that he got on with her before they even met (he insisted on being the one to call her and invite her over) is awesome.
So yes, I'm cleaning the house before she gets here in a few hours. It actually looks really good in here now (except for the bed-area).
We've started scrapbooking in earnest these days. Ryan and I made each other special Valentines that just...wow. Mine came out so much better than expected, and his really blew my mind.
And this is the one I did for him :)
I miss my friends.
My life is seeping into fiction. A constant wheel of narration plays through my head, skipping and popping in places.
She held out a soft hand, not expecting the sting of rejection...
I move, but am not moved to motion. I'm that top which has forgotten how to spin. I used to spin for you.
Her breath came in gasps as she read the words plainly before her face...
Hate is a subtle word, creeping up through your toes and curling around your tongue like a tender vine. It's too sweet a word for you, and so, I must create a new one.
Anger wore her like a mask, and she held it to her heart like a talisman...
You feed like a leach with your round mouth and frenzy of teeth. Look for the first sign of blood and we're sure to see you. Any second now.
Reason does not live here, not in this place she now stood--not where everything was so cold...
Any second now and you will see what you have wrought.
What do you like to make or order for brunch?
When I was much younger--say, about seven--my best friend in the entire world was an older girl of thirteen called Susan. To us, brunch was purple grapes and slices of cheddar cheese. I used to go upstairs (her grandmother owned the apartment complex I lived in down in Carlsbad, CA) and say "Let's have brunch!" and we'd bust out the grapes and cheese (eating them together, of course) and listen to *gasp!* rap music. Our favourites were Kriss Kross, LL Cool J, and Montel Jordan (who wasn't really rap...but, yeah).
So, when I think of brunch, even now, I can almost taste the grapes and cheese while "Jump! Jump!" plays on repeat in the back of my head.
Sigh *giggles* I was a dorky child.
