MY BOYFRIEND IS AT THIS MOMENT BUYING TICKETS FOR NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS AT CRYSTAL BALLROOM IN PDX.
PLEASE EXCUSE THE CAPSLOCKS BUT THIS IS PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT MOMENT OF MY LIFE.
Monday, Sep 22 @ 9:00 PM, McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - Portland, Oregon.
If anyone wants to come with us, buy tickets and call me. We'll share a hotel room or something.
OMFG NICK CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVE.
EDIT: Bought. Fucking bought.
Surprisingly, The Cure's Disintegration is a great ablum to listen to on repeat while cleaning.
Over the course of the day, I have endeavoured to not only do the dishes, but clean and organize our kitchen from top to bottom. It looks amazing. I went out and bought heavy-duty s-hooks to hang our pots and pans from the sides of our steel pantry shelving. That worked brilliantly, and freed up a lot of shelf-space for our many spices and teas. Being cheap, I took from our collection of clear-headed thumb tacks and made a little space on the wall next to the stove for our cooking utensils to hang. It looks rather neat in there now--much more like the cool kitchen we were going for. Now all I have to do is tidy up the prep-table and febreeze the floor (our kitchen is carpeted and came with its own unique smell, ew).
Next: the bathroom.
Joy. lol
I work every. single. day. this week. I was originally supposed to only work three, which turned into four, then today I got a call (just now, actually) asking if I'd switch some shifts around and take one of my co-worker's shifts completely (because my boss is cutting her hours, not her fault). So, yeah, I don't have a single day off. I mean, I like the money, but I'd also like to, you know, do laundry, go to Safeway and get foods (you know...those really unimportant things that I TOTALLY don't have to do in order to live...at least I can still breathe, and, hey, water is free....).
I guess I should have gone job-hunting after all...
But that's ok, because Katy-love sent me Nick Cave's new album and I'm very much in love all over again. Nick Cave makes everything ok.
Because we had a rather tight Christmas, Ryan and I decided it might be fun to do really nice Easter baskets. He got me a lot more than I got him for x-mas, so I've decided to go all-out on him. Well, as much as I can with the measly paycheck I got (it was supposed to be more--apparently one of the managers is shaving hours, illegally I might add). We decided on a zombie theme (because, hey, what other day of the year can we celebrate the rising of one of History's most famous of un-dead?) and instead of baskets, we're getting bags or containers for each other. I found the most darling zombie cupcake bookbag on etsy, along with soap made with Guinness (one of his fav. drinks), a novelty CD of really bad covers of Depeche Mode songs (the packaging is delightfully cheap as well--it's all just as horrible as I had hoped it would be), and this shirt. I'm in the process of negotiating a bento box full of sushi soaps as the last gift, as well.
I am an awesome girlfriend. :)
EDIT: And the sushi is MIIIIIINE!!!! *does a little dance* I officially own Easter.
I made a friend. Her name is Emily and we work together. She's adorable and very hyper, which usually gets on my nerves, but she's too awesome to bother me. We've been working together almost five months now, and finally bonded over me showing her how to recover the bead aisles, and her discovering that I'm a Depeche Mode fan.
Her reaction: *gasps and holds a hand to her mouth* You like DEPECHE MODE?! They're my absolute FAVOURITE band!!!!
When Ryan found out about this, he invited her over and we listened to music and had bubble tea and just had a really good time. Ryan is never comfortable with strangers, so the fact that he got on with her before they even met (he insisted on being the one to call her and invite her over) is awesome.
So yes, I'm cleaning the house before she gets here in a few hours. It actually looks really good in here now (except for the bed-area).
We've started scrapbooking in earnest these days. Ryan and I made each other special Valentines that just...wow. Mine came out so much better than expected, and his really blew my mind.
And this is the one I did for him :)
It is totally possible to bathe if you don't own (read: forgot to pack) towels. I'm mostly dry and hunkered down in bed for a while till I'm fully dry. It's warm and full of comf'.
Also, everyone who has never heard of Joe Richardson needs to go get the new Recoil album, subHuman, and Joe's album Somhelgisfel. I'm willing to share a song or two for those who want a listen, but I highly suggest buying it if you like the samples. Joe's an awesome southern-based blues musician whose work reaches above and beyond any stereotype you've ever heard come out of that genre. The songs are completely accessible no matter what your tastes or age group.
Can we say that Crystal has a musical crush? Oh heck yeah!!
Ryan and I have interviews at Michael's craft store in the next town up today.
SWEET!
I would love love love to work at Michael's. Cheap art supplies, nice people, fun job? Yesum!
Over the last couple of days I've applied to like...10 places in total. Like, actually turned in applications. I think that's the most I've ever done at once before and I'm very proud of myself for buckling down and doing it. It can be hard, you know, to force yourself to grow up. I'm so afraid of life that sometimes simply walking out of my bedroom door puts me in sweats. I suppose it's social anxiety or something, but I've felt that ever since I was a kid. The paranoia is bad. But I'm getting out there, making changes in order to survive. And once I've figured out how exactly one survives on one's own, then the living will start--and I hear tell that this whole living thing is rather nice.
Now, for what I'm really looking forward to having money for (har har) is Dave Gahan's new album, Hourglass. The full press/bio/review was just released and it reads like it's going to be worlds different from Paper Monsters. A few of the songs are described as "Eno-esque" or having a Siouxsie Sioux sort of feel to them. You all know I'm squeeing hard over here.
Ok, so enough of me being a dork. I've gotta get ready for the interview.
Which friend or acquaintance most influenced your taste in music?
Submitted by Rev Stan.
Oh man. It has to be Katy--hands down. Before meeting her, I had never been a serious fan of music. I was what you would call...musically stunted. My parents only liked one certain type of music when I was younger, so I didn't branch out too much from that. But after I met Katy in 2004, it's been a whole other story. It seems like every time we talk she's got a new band or artist I simply must hear. She turned me on to Tom Waits. She showed me that Depeche Mode were more than just a kitschy, depressing 80's electronica band. And, perhaps most importantly of all, she enabled my love of Nick Cave through the cleverly-thought out gift of 'Stagger Lee' in mp3 format.
It was love at first gun shot.
I think the point is that I trust Katy's taste implicitly. Hell, it's better than watching MTV to see what's 'hot' *gags*
Today Ryan and I went to Portland. Now, it's been...years since I've really been there, and he's never been himself. SO, my mom dropped us off on Burnside right in the middle of the Pearl District and the first thing we did was hit one of those awesome low-key record stores. Being the silly Depeche Mode fan that I am, I managed to find the HUGEST poster (of the "It's No Good" single cover art) possible within a minute of entering the store. I also managed to sniff out an original vinyl of the "Shake the Disease" single and Recoil's Hydrology (also on vinyl).
We checked out Whole Foods, which is an awesome organic grocery store that neither of us would mind working at if we had the chance. From there, it was off to Powell's Book Store, which, I swear, has got to be the biggest book store I've ever been to. It's so huge that the subjects have to be separated by rooms with color-coding. It's seriously cool, though. When mom came to pick us up, we hit the gelatto stand for some awesome Italian nosh.
And now I'm home. And exhausted. Ugh, summer. Why?
Thank you very much to Katy and Ryan for helping me compile a bunch of songs my brother Reece (who is a budding music lover for sure) might like. The final tracklist is:
Clean (Colder Mix) - Depeche Mode
Freeze - Recoil
La Mer - NIN
The Robots - Kraftwerk
Kathy's Song - Apoptygma Berzerk
I Am A Little Explosion - Self
Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger - Daft Punk
Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money) - Pet Shop Boys
Science Genius Girl - Freeze Pop
We Are All Made of Stars - Moby
She Blinded Me With Science - Thomas Dolby
My little brother is seriously cool, man. He loves my music because it makes him dance. I love him because he dances like a little white boy (which he is, thank you Katy) with no rhythm. We hope we can fix that last one so that he doesn't end up dancing as poorly as his older sister ;)
Next CD I'm making him is going to be songs that are all about Cars. Yes, Numan's "Cars" will be track one. Any other suggestions?
